Jewish Spirit Shines Bright in Elul at Moshav Even Sapir Near Jerusalem

מאת הרב בן ציון נורדמן

The story · English

In the heart of the Jerusalem hills lies Moshav Even Sapir, a place where history and spirituality intertwine, especially as the Jewish month of Elul approaches. The community, named after Rabbi Yaakov Sapir's book documenting Jewish communities worldwide, embodies a deep connection to Jewish heritage and tradition. Rabbi Sapir traveled extensively about 170 years ago, visiting Yemen, Egypt, India, and Australia, driven by a heartfelt concern for Jews in distant lands rather than personal gain.

During a recent visit to Even Sapir, the author experienced this spirit firsthand at the local synagogue "Mateh Binyamin." There, Shmuel Sasson, a founding member and gabbai originally from Kurdistan, welcomed the visitors warmly, managing the synagogue with the care of a father preparing a home for his children. The synagogue walls display nearly 50 framed prayers, reflecting over 70 years of continuous tradition and a sense of belonging that transcends generations.

The article highlights a verse from Isaiah (54:11) connecting the sapphire stone to the building of Jerusalem, symbolizing the spiritual foundation of the land and its people. The month of Elul, known as a time of mercy and repentance, is described in Hasidic tradition as when "the King is in the field," meaning God seeks out His people, much like Rabbi Sapir sought Jewish communities worldwide. This period illuminates the inner spark within every Jew, often hidden beneath daily struggles but shining brightly during Elul.

The author reflects on the shared journey of Rabbi Sapir and the community’s own spiritual path, emphasizing that Jerusalem is built not only from physical stones but from the care and connection among Jews everywhere. The experience at Even Sapir serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds and the collective effort to prepare for the High Holy Days together.
