Itamar Ben Gvir Faces Legal Setback Over Crocodile Security Plan Amid Political Tensions

The story · English

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir's controversial plan to use crocodiles for prison patrols at Ketziot prison has been temporarily halted by a Jerusalem District Court judge. Judge Avraham Rubin issued an interim injunction against deploying crocodiles, responding to a petition filed by the animal rights group Let the Animals Live, represented by attorneys Hagit Gluska and Amnon Keren. The judge expressed concern over potential harm to the crocodiles, calling the claims worthy of further examination. This is not the first time crocodiles have been at the center of legal battles in Israel; in 1996, the Supreme Court banned human-crocodile fights at Hamat Gader.

Ben Gvir, known for his hardline stance and advocacy of the death penalty exclusively for Arab terrorists, dismissed the injunction as judicial obstruction during wartime, framing crocodiles as "important deterrence measures." Critics highlight that Israel's deterrence has historically relied on military superiority and covert operations, not such unconventional methods. Ben Gvir envisions prison service members working alongside crocodiles as partners in security, reflecting his broader combative approach.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to support Ben Gvir politically, despite ongoing petitions to remove him from office. Netanyahu's backing is seen as a significant endorsement amid Ben Gvir's growing influence within the Israeli government. Defense Minister Israel Katz, described as a protégé of Ben Gvir, has mirrored his aggressive style, including publicly firing senior military commanders and associating with controversial figures. Katz also met with detainee Tal Yinon Dradik following parliamentary calls for his release, actions viewed as undermining the independence of law enforcement.

Ben Gvir openly challenges the judiciary and legal advisors, defending his political expression even when it involves criticism of the prosecution and police. His legal team argues that attempts to limit his speech amount to silencing an elected official. The Supreme Court is expected to issue interim rulings that may impose stricter boundaries between Ben Gvir and law enforcement, especially critical during the election period. Additionally, ongoing investigations focus on appointments within the Police Investigations Department, with political efforts aiming to prosecute senior legal officials who have investigated government corruption.

This unfolding situation highlights deep divisions within Israel's political and judicial systems, with Ben Gvir and his allies pushing a confrontational agenda that challenges established norms and institutions.
