Hundreds of Karlin Hasidim Enter Pool Fully Clothed in Unusual Tradition
A rare video circulating online shows hundreds of Karlin Hasidim immersing themselves in a pool while fully dressed in their traditional black-and-white attire. The footage, which has sparked curiosity on social media, depicts the Hasidim entering the water without removing any clothing.
Historian Israel Shapira, writing for the ultra-Orthodox site Kikar HaShabbat, explored possible reasons behind this practice. He referenced the Jerusalem Talmud, which recounts Rabbi Zeira entering the Jordan River fully clothed so that his garments would remain soaked with the waters of the Land of Israel, symbolizing his deep love and sanctity for the land. Shapira suggested that the custom of some Hasidim immersing in springs and rivers while clothed may stem from this idea of carrying the "moisture" of the holy land even after leaving the water.
Shapira emphasized that this is his personal hypothesis rather than an established historical or halachic ruling. He also cited the author of "Kaftor VeFerach," who highlighted the sanctity of the Jordan River's waters as part of the Land of Israel, reinforcing the symbolic significance of the act.
