IDF Reservists Used Unauthorized Lebanese eSIM Cards During Lebanon Combat Operations

The story · English

Reservists from the IDF's Paratroopers Brigade Battalion 699 purchased digital eSIM cards from Lebanese sources during combat operations in Lebanon, violating military protocols and without official approval. The cards were intended to overcome cellular reception issues in operational areas. According to Channel 7, these eSIM cards were used not only for private calls but also for platoon and operational WhatsApp group communications, raising serious concerns about potential security breaches.

An eSIM is a digital SIM embedded in a mobile device that enables quick switching between cellular providers without a physical card. In this case, the cards were indirectly acquired from Lebanese entities, an enemy state, which is against IDF regulations. Security experts warn that using communication tools sourced from hostile countries can expose sensitive information and pose significant security risks, even if encrypted apps are used, because metadata such as physical location, usage times, and communication endpoints can be accessed by the cellular provider.

The incident is believed to be more widespread within the battalion rather than isolated. The battalion commander has issued a call for all reservists to cooperate with an ongoing investigation by providing details about their devices, eSIM numbers, purchase dates, and other relevant information. The commander emphasized that the investigation aims primarily to assess and mitigate security damage rather than to punish individuals.

This case highlights the risks of using foreign or enemy communication infrastructure in modern warfare, a practice also seen in conflicts like the war in Ukraine, where opposing sides use enemy SIM cards to operate weapons and drones. The IDF is currently examining the full scope and security implications of this unauthorized eSIM usage during the Lebanon fighting.
