Australia’s captain Jackson Irvine draws Israeli backlash over pro-Palestinian activism

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Mako על ידי baba
The story · English

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Australian captain Jackson Irvine is being singled out by some Israeli fans because of his outspoken support for Palestinians. Australia is usually seen as a broadly likable, low-profile team, but Irvine has made it harder for some Israelis to warm to the Socceroos.

Irvine, the midfielder who has become the face of Australian football, is known for taking public positions on social and international issues. He has backed workers’ rights campaigns, spoken about social inequality, and criticized human rights conditions in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup. Supporters view him as a principled activist, while critics say he blurs the line between sport and politics.

The strongest controversy came after the war between Israel and Hamas began. Irvine publicly expressed solidarity with Palestinians and Gaza residents, took part in humanitarian aid efforts, supported donations for civilians in the Strip, and commented on destruction and the humanitarian disaster there. He also appeared at events and in photos carrying pro-Palestinian messages. His critics accused him of one-sided activism against Israel, especially because he did not make similar public statements about Israeli victims of the October 7 attack.

Australia also played Palestine twice in recent World Cup qualifying campaigns, and in those matches Irvine and teammates showed solidarity, including posing with fans holding message signs and exchanging shirts after the games. The issue also caused friction at his German club, St. Pauli, which is known for progressive politics, anti-racism and human rights, but also has historical ties to Israel and Hapoel Tel Aviv. The debate became so intense that it reached club management and German media. The article notes there are no known statements from Irvine calling for violence against Israel, supporting Hamas, or denying Israel’s right to exist, but says his pro-Palestinian stance has still made him one of football’s most visible such voices.
