Israeli Boy Suffers Rare Skull Air Embolism After Archery Injury at Summer Camp

The story · English

An 11-year-old boy was injured during an archery activity at a summer camp when a friend accidentally shot an arrow that struck the upper part of his nose. Although the external wound appeared minor, the boy was taken to Kaplan Medical Center's pediatric emergency room for evaluation. Comprehensive examinations, including imaging and specialist consultations in ENT and ophthalmology, revealed a rare complication: air had entered the cranial cavity through the sinuses due to the arrow penetrating the nasal bridge and eye socket area.

Following a multidisciplinary consultation involving experts from Kaplan and Schneider Children's Medical Center, the boy was transferred to Schneider for further treatment and monitoring in the pediatric intensive care unit. Additional assessments by trauma, neurosurgery, ENT, and ophthalmology specialists confirmed no need for surgical intervention. He was subsequently moved to the surgical ward as his condition improved.

Dr. Tzafnat Yair Prokocimer, head of Kaplan's pediatric emergency department, emphasized the case's lesson that seemingly minor external injuries can conceal serious internal damage requiring thorough investigation. Dr. Nir Samuel, senior physician and trauma service director at Schneider, highlighted the importance of close cooperation between hospitals and multidisciplinary teams in managing such complex injuries. He also stressed the need for parents and camp organizers to ensure safe use of archery equipment, proper supervision, and age-appropriate activities to prevent severe or life-threatening injuries.
