10-Year-Old Boy Suffers Rare Skull Injury After Arrow Penetrates Face at Summer Camp

תורגם ותומצת מתוך N12 על ידי baba
The story · English

A 10-year-old boy named Daniel from the Shfela region was seriously injured during a summer camp activity when an arrow struck his face. Initially, the camp informed Daniel's father, Michael, that his son had a minor cut, but upon arrival at Kaplan Medical Center's pediatric emergency room, it became clear the injury was far more severe. Daniel began vomiting and experiencing intense head pain, prompting immediate medical attention.

CT scans revealed the arrow had penetrated through Daniel's nasal bridge and eye socket, passing into the cranial cavity and causing two fractures and air infiltration into the skull, a rare and dangerous complication. Pediatric emergency director Dr. Tzafnat Yair Prokocimer emphasized that despite the small external wound, the injury was deep and required urgent specialist care. Daniel was transferred to Schneider Children's Medical Center's intensive care unit for further evaluation.

Fortunately, after thorough assessment, doctors determined surgery was unnecessary, and Daniel was moved to the surgical ward for supportive treatment. His condition stabilized, but he continues to suffer from headaches, dizziness, and vomiting. Michael expressed relief that his son narrowly avoided permanent vision loss and brain damage, calling for stricter safety measures regarding recreational archery equipment.

Dr. Nir Samuel, head of trauma services at Schneider, warned that even seemingly minor wounds from archery gear can cause life-threatening injuries. Daniel's mother also noted the emotional impact on the other child involved, who has been distressed since the accident. The family urges camps to enforce safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
