The story · English

Twenty years after being severely wounded in the Battle of Wadi Saluki during the Second Lebanon War, IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effi Deferin has publicly shared his long struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a candid interview on the IDF podcast, Deferin described how he repressed his psychological wounds for years, only realizing much later that he was suffering from PTSD. He emphasized that PTSD is an invisible injury, often misunderstood because it lacks physical signs, saying, "People ask 'So what’s wrong with you?' but inside you carry something that follows you constantly."

Deferin recounted returning to command his battalion after his injury and choosing to suppress the traumatic memories, a decision he now regrets due to the harm it caused to himself and those around him. He stressed the importance of early treatment, noting that recognizing and addressing PTSD not only helps the individual but also benefits their family, friends, and colleagues. He described how even two decades later, sudden noises or flashes can trigger intense flashbacks, but professional help enables managing these episodes effectively.

Addressing soldiers who fought in the recent "Sword of Iron" operation, where many were exposed to prolonged traumatic events, Deferin urged them to seek help without shame. "If you are brave, go treat yourself," he said, framing treatment as a responsibility rather than a weakness. Reflecting on his own experience of stopping and restarting therapy, he expressed a wish that he had sought help sooner. Deferin concluded by acknowledging that while the battle ended long ago, the psychological wounds remain, and the crucial question is whether one is willing to acknowledge and treat them.
