Israeli Commentator Ishay Cohen Praises Bezalel Smotrich’s Political Achievements Over Ultra-Orthodox Parties

Ishay Cohen, a commentator for Kikar HaShabbat, expressed admiration for Religious Zionist leader Bezalel Smotrich’s political performance, contrasting it with the disappointing results of ultra-Orthodox parties he traditionally supports. Speaking on the program "Iron Kippot," Cohen acknowledged ongoing criticism of Smotrich but said he envies Smotrich’s ability to deliver tangible achievements for his constituency. He highlighted Smotrich’s success in securing budgets and advancing de facto sovereignty in the West Bank, noting that local leaders and Religious Zionist representatives recognize the significant changes Smotrich has brought to Judea and Samaria.

Cohen pointed out that ultra-Orthodox parties have criticized Smotrich for focusing on his own community, but he framed this as a compliment to Smotrich’s effectiveness. Looking ahead to coalition negotiations after the upcoming elections, Cohen warned that political opponents aim to reverse Smotrich’s accomplishments quickly, citing left-wing analysts who urge new governments to undo his policies in the West Bank. Cohen concluded by stating that among right-wing leaders, Smotrich is the least likely to disappoint, unlike other figures such as Netanyahu, Ben Gvir, and ultra-Orthodox leaders Aryeh Deri, Yaakov Litzman, and Yitzhak Goldknopf.
