The story · English

In an era dominated by digital streaming and algorithm-driven playlists, a notable trend is emerging in Israel: younger generations are reviving interest in physical music formats, particularly CDs. This resurgence is exemplified by "Disk Center," a music store founded in 1984 by Benny Suleimani, which has evolved from a simple retail outlet into a cultural landmark for music enthusiasts nationwide. The store experienced peak demand in the 1990s, hosting international stars like Radiohead, Nick Cave, and Michael Jackson, who notably purchased nearly 200 CDs during his visits.

Despite the global shift to digital music in the 2000s, which led to the closure of most CD retailers in Israel, Disk Center survived by downsizing and pivoting to online sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkably, the store now sells three times more CDs than vinyl records, highlighting a unique revival of the CD format. Experts attribute this trend to the tangible nature of CDs, which offer a physical connection through album art and liner notes, and require active engagement that counters digital distractions.

Young customers also view buying CDs as a way to support artists and feel part of a fan community. Many discover CDs through their parents, sparking nostalgia. Teenagers like Ariel Negev and Yehali Lahav express that playing music from a CD provides a richer, more personal experience than streaming. Suleimani reflects that despite changing technologies, people ultimately return to familiar, meaningful ways of enjoying music, regardless of age or life path.
