Pitzu Kedem Architects Win Top Award for Modest Modern Home in Karmi Yosef

The story · English

A private residence in Karmi Yosef, designed by Pitzu Kedem and his architectural team for a couple and their three children, has been officially named Israel's most successful private home of 2025. Despite its modest budget and size compared to other projects by the firm, the house was awarded the Architecture Emblem Prize for its balanced, precise, and mature design that harmoniously integrates with the surrounding landscape without imposing on it. The jury praised the project for its thoughtful planning, material restraint, and seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The home also received international recognition from Interior Design magazine.

Kedem explained that the clients desired a house reflecting the modernist values of the 1950s, considered the golden era of Israeli architecture. The design aimed to create a high-quality home that appears as if it has always belonged to the site. The project embraced the challenge of a limited budget by focusing on material precision and contextual adaptation rather than scale or extravagance.

Situated on a sloped plot overlooking the Tel Gezer National Park, the house features a low profile facing the street with exposed concrete and a distinctive continuous upper window band that visually lightens the structure. The building consists of two parallel volumes separated by a stone-clad passage, which defines the transition between public and private spaces and allows indirect natural light to enter. The topographical differences between street level, the house, and the garden were used to create spatial separation and to incorporate a small basement shelter.

Natural materials like wood and monochromatic light colors contrast with the concrete and stone, adding warmth and enhancing the dynamic interplay of light throughout the day. Kedem emphasized that the home's value lies not in economic accessibility but in offering an alternative architectural presence for clients with means. Beyond private homes, Kedem's firm has expanded into urban residential buildings, hotels, and product design, earning further accolades such as the 2025 Architecture Emblem Prize for a residential building in Tel Aviv.

This project exemplifies how careful attention to context, materials, and light can produce award-winning architecture within budget constraints, while maintaining a strong connection to Israeli architectural heritage and landscape.
