Iraqi Shiite Cleric Calls for Peace and Normalization with Israel Amid Regional Conflict

מאת אוריאל פיליפ

The story · English

Rait al-Tamimi, a Shiite cleric from Baghdad, has publicly advocated for peace and normalization between Iraq and Israel, a stance that sharply contrasts with prevailing anti-Israel sentiments in Iraq. Having lived through Saddam Hussein's regime and the American occupation, al-Tamimi recounted encounters with influential figures such as former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and associates of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Despite these connections, his experiences led him to different conclusions about regional relations.

Al-Tamimi emphasized the historical trust and partnership between Iraqi Arabs and the Jewish community, highlighting the respected roles Jews played in Iraqi society as merchants, doctors, and lawyers. He argued that a peace agreement between Iraq and Israel is more feasible than many other international accords due to clear justifications rooted in shared history and interests.

Addressing the October 7 attacks and ongoing regional conflicts, al-Tamimi condemned terrorist organizations, describing their actions as brutal and inhumane. He likened Israel's current battles against these groups to Iraq's own fight against terror, framing it as a struggle of light against darkness.

His outspoken views and direct communication with Israelis have sparked severe backlash, including death threats and five assassination attempts, one involving a car bomb near Iraqi intelligence headquarters. Al-Tamimi accused influential Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr of inciting hostility against him rather than pursuing legal action under Iraqi laws prohibiting normalization with Israel.

He also noted the presence of Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hezbollah, and Houthi cells in Iraq, which contribute to regional tensions and anti-Israel activities. Despite the risks, al-Tamimi envisions Iraq choosing a future of peace and regional partnership over continued alignment with the Iranian axis of hatred and terror. He stated, "Our interest is with Israel, a state governed by law and committed to pluralism. I cannot forsake this to join the axis of hatred and terror in the region."
