Israeli Political Divisions Deepen Amid Calls for Shared Responsibility and Understanding

Oshrat Elman uses the metaphor of a jar shaken to illustrate how political disputes in Israel have escalated into personal conflicts. She explains that just as red and black ants began fighting after the jar was shaken, Israelis increasingly view each other as threats rather than people with differing views. This shift from ideological disagreement to identity-based conflict is particularly evident in the contentious debate over ultra-Orthodox conscription into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Elman emphasizes that while military service is a shared national responsibility and the current conscription system needs reform, the issue is far more complex than often portrayed. It involves decades of history, conflicting values, political decisions, and balancing Israel’s security needs with religious identity. Past government attempts to create compromise frameworks were repeatedly struck down by the Supreme Court, leaving no long-term solution. The IDF itself acknowledges it cannot absorb all potential recruits overnight, requiring careful planning and resources.

Despite the challenges, the rate of ultra-Orthodox enlistment has reached unprecedented levels, with many seeking meaningful ways to serve, especially following the October 7 attacks. However, practical obstacles have prevented some from joining, a fact that has received little public attention. Elman calls for recognizing the humanity and good intentions on all sides and for collaborative problem-solving rather than mutual blame.

She also critiques social media algorithms, political messaging, and some media outlets for deepening societal rifts by amplifying anger and simplistic narratives. Large-scale campaigns against conscription laws have fostered hostility, causing many in the ultra-Orthodox community to feel under siege and withdraw from broader society. Elman urges Israelis to question who is "shaking the jar" and to seek better, more compassionate debates that challenge ideas without attacking people.

Ultimately, she warns that the greatest danger is not disagreement itself but losing sight of shared humanity and a common future. Israelis must remember that despite their divisions, they remain inside the same jar together, requiring responsibility, empathy, and unity to move forward.
