Religious Zionist Dating Terms Explained: What Matchmaking Labels Really Mean

The story · English

In the Religious Zionist community, dating often begins with a question about one's religious observance level rather than personal interests. To clarify common matchmaking terms, an unofficial glossary was created to decode what these labels truly signify.

"Torani Open" is perceived as someone who follows strict religious laws but also enjoys secular culture; in reality, it means attending morning prayers regularly while watching popular TV shows with some content skipped. "Dati on the Spectrum" suggests deep spiritual searching but often means inconsistent observance with a general appreciation for tradition. "Light" implies a casual, easygoing approach, but typically involves minimal religious practice, such as late morning prayers and symbolic head coverings.

"Mainstream" refers to the core Religious Zionist lifestyle, including participation in youth movements like Bnei Akiva, national service, and community events. "Torani" or "Haredi-Leumi" denotes strict adherence to religious law, with men maintaining intense study routines and filtered technology use, and women committed to modest dress and conservative values. Conversations quickly shift to religious topics on first dates.

"Formerly Religious" varies widely; some no longer wear a kippah or study daily, while others maintain some practices but reject social labels. Such dates often involve explaining personal religious journeys. Ultimately, these labels serve as shorthand for complex identities, reminding that behind every term is an individual seeking a life partner, especially poignant around the Jewish holiday Tu B'Av.
