Former Big Brother Contestant Criticizes Use of 'Rape' for Online Extortion Allegations

Yaanki Goldhaber, a former contestant on the Israeli reality show Big Brother, sparked controversy after sharing that he experienced two incidents he described as "rape" involving severe sexual extortion, threats, and disturbing messages that caused him deep anxiety. Initially, many followers interpreted his use of the term "rape" as referring to physical sexual assault. Goldhaber later clarified that the events occurred in the digital realm, coining the term "technological rape" to describe the online abuse he endured.

Maor Baruchman, also a former Big Brother participant, publicly condemned Goldhaber's choice of words, emphasizing the importance of precise terminology. Baruchman acknowledged the seriousness of sexual extortion and the distribution of intimate materials online, calling them grave crimes deserving condemnation. However, she argued that labeling these digital violations as "rape" is incorrect and risks diluting the term's meaning, which traditionally denotes physical coercion and lifelong trauma.

Baruchman warned that expanding the definition of rape to include all forms of digital victimization blurs critical boundaries and undermines the experiences of physical assault survivors. She urged society to clearly distinguish between digital violence and physical rape, stressing that while both require serious attention and action, conflating them could diminish the gravity of the original term. Baruchman concluded by calling for rigorous efforts to combat online extortion and abuse without misappropriating the term "rape."
