Chabad Yeshiva Student Attacked With Knife in Melbourne Continues Outreach Undeterred

The story · English

On a Friday afternoon in the quiet Bentley neighborhood of Melbourne, Australia, 18-year-old Yeshiva student Yitzchak Levilental from the local Chabad community was violently attacked while performing his regular outreach activities. Around 1:35 p.m., as Levilental was walking between homes offering Jewish men the opportunity to lay tefillin and distributing Shabbat candles and challah, an older man unexpectedly became aggressive after being politely asked if he wished to perform a mitzvah. The man shouted profanities and accused Levilental of harassment. Despite Levilental’s calm response and attempt to continue his route, the man followed him, then suddenly returned, threatening him with a knife and shouting death threats against him and his rabbis.

Levilental responded with remarkable composure, raising his hands and trying to de-escalate the situation by stepping back. The attacker advanced, wielding the knife, and struck Levilental with a punch to the abdomen. Nearby residents quickly called emergency services, and Victoria Police arrived promptly, detaining a suspect by 2:04 p.m. The investigation is ongoing, with no formal charges filed yet.

Despite the traumatic assault, Levilental stunned those around him by immediately resuming his outreach work after giving his statement to police. He collected his tefillin and continued his mission to inspire and engage Jewish community members ahead of Shabbat, embodying resilience and dedication in the face of violence.
