The story · English

In an unprecedented event on Monday, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, hosted Rabbi Mendy Shtrik, president of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States (ARIS), along with a special delegation of rabbis at his opulent Lusail Palace in Doha. This official meeting, publicized by Qatar News Agency, marks a rare public acknowledgment of the Jewish community's ongoing presence and activities within the Gulf state, which has no formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

The delegation came to offer condolences on the recent passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, who died at age 74. The meeting was attended by Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, underscoring the high importance the Qatari government placed on the occasion. Among the rabbis was also Iran's Chief Rabbi Yehuda Gerami, highlighting the complex regional religious dynamics.

Rabbi Shtrik publicly thanked the Emir for supporting Jewish life in Qatar, revealing that his son, Rabbi Eliyahu Shtrik, regularly serves the Jewish community and visitors in the country. This event occurs amid Qatar's delicate relations with the West and the Jewish world, following recent controversies such as the gifting of a Qatari plane to former U.S. President Trump and ongoing regional diplomatic efforts concerning Iran.

The presence of senior rabbis from Muslim countries in the Emir's palace sends a clear message of interfaith dialogue, mutual respect, and regional tolerance amid Middle Eastern tensions. Qatar has recently condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, positioning itself as a moderate state capable of engaging diverse parties. This historic meeting reflects deeper shifts beneath the surface in the Middle East, where religious and cultural openness is emerging despite ongoing political and military conflicts.
