Satmar Rebbe Visits New York Prison to Advocate for Jewish Inmates' Religious Rights

The Satmar Hasidic leader, Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Teitelbaum, conducted a rare visit to the Shawangunk correctional facility in Ulster County, New York. The visit aimed to support several Jewish inmates serving sentences there and to discuss their incarceration conditions with senior local and state law enforcement officials from Albany. The initiative was organized by Tzedek, a group assisting Jewish prisoners across the United States.

During the meeting, representatives highlighted the unique challenges faced by Jewish inmates, emphasizing that access to kosher food and religious texts is a fundamental right, not a privilege. Rabbi Teitelbaum personally encouraged the inmates and spoke with each one individually. Following the visit, extended discussions took place between the Hasidic leadership, the assistance organization, prison administration, and government officials.

The talks focused on improving incarceration conditions and accommodating religious needs throughout New York State's correctional facilities. The organization indicated that initial steps toward these improvements are expected to be implemented in the coming days.
