Israeli National Team Coaches Seek Player Release Ahead of Yom Kippur

Ahead of the upcoming international window, Israeli national team coach Ran Ben Shimon and assistant Gal Cohen traveled to the United States to address a key issue involving the team’s forwards. Their mission focused on monitoring the performances of Israel’s leading strikers: Tai Baribo, Dor Turgeman, and Idan Toklomati. Beyond scouting, the trip aimed to negotiate the early release of these players from their club commitments to ensure their availability for the national team during Yom Kippur.

The Israeli Football Association arranged meetings with the management and coaching staff of the players’ clubs, New England Revolution, Charlotte FC, and D.C. United, facilitated by the association’s chairman Shino Zawarets and vice chairman Moran Meiri. Both officials have personal connections with the clubs’ Jewish owners, which the Israeli side hopes will encourage a positive response. Ben Shimon specifically requested that Toklomati and Turgeman be released a day before Yom Kippur to join the team in Austria, and that Baribo and Toklomati be excused from matches scheduled just before the holiday.

While the chances of securing these early releases are uncertain, the Israeli coaching staff is pursuing the matter due to the importance of these three forwards to the national squad. UEFA regulations impose strict timelines for player releases, but the Israeli side is appealing for flexibility given the religious observance and the team’s preparation needs. The national team is thus actively working to balance club commitments with national duties during this sensitive period.
