Turkish Document Reveals Erdogan’s Detailed Plan for Gaza, West Bank, and Jerusalem
A Turkish document drafted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office outlines his strategic plans for Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, and potentially broader Middle Eastern influence. Ben Avrahami, a research fellow at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, revealed in an interview with Channel 7 that the document, written in Turkish and Arabic, details a multi-stage Turkish plan to deepen its presence across the Middle East, focusing heavily on the Palestinian issue. The plan aims to exploit the Palestinian cause to gain influence among Arabs and Muslims, similar to Iranian strategies.
Jerusalem is a central focus of Erdogan’s ambitions, with the document and public statements indicating a desire to restore the city to a status under Turkish influence, described by Avrahami as "neo-Ottomanism." The plan begins with Gaza, where Turkey envisions itself as the main patron of governance, including military and civilian Turkish forces. Turkey intends to mediate reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, viewing Hamas as its primary proxy to expand control over the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, ultimately targeting Jerusalem.
Despite concerns that Turkish troops were excluded from the U.S.-led "Peace Council," Avrahami warns Erdogan will likely find alternative methods, such as humanitarian organizations, to establish a Turkish presence in Gaza and the West Bank. The document also suggests preparations for potential direct military confrontation with Israel, accompanied by a domestic Turkish campaign demonizing Israel.
Avrahami stresses the need for Israel to remain vigilant regarding Turkish activities in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. He notes Hamas operatives have long been active in Turkey, and Israel must enhance intelligence and operational capabilities in the Turkish arena. Regarding the friendly ties between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Erdogan, Avrahami cautions that Israel must prepare for a post-Trump era, as future U.S. administrations may not maintain the same stance toward Turkey and Israel.
The document has received little international or Israeli media attention due to its Turkish language, but its revelations highlight a significant regional security challenge posed by Turkey’s ambitions under Erdogan.
