Bank of Israel Warns Public on How to Spot Phishing Messages Impersonating Banks
Phishing messages pretending to be from banks or credit card companies often look official and can deceive even experienced users. Their goal is to trick recipients into revealing personal details or login credentials. According to the Bank of Israel, cybercriminals use these messages to redirect people to fake websites resembling their bank's site. A key warning sign is messages that try to create urgency or fear, such as threats that an account will be blocked or that immediate action is required. The Bank of Israel explains this pressure tactic aims to make recipients act quickly without verifying the message's authenticity.
The Bank of Israel emphasizes that banks never ask customers to provide passwords, one-time codes, or credit card details via SMS, WhatsApp, or email. If such a message is received, users should avoid clicking on any links and instead access their accounts through the official app or by typing the bank's website address directly. If someone has already clicked a suspicious link or entered personal information, they should immediately contact their bank to block payment methods or account access as needed and change their password. The National Cyber Directorate also recommends reporting phishing attempts through official channels.
