The story · English

At the wedding of Benaya Venino, his twin brother Itai Venino delivered a heartfelt speech commemorating their late brother, Amichai Venino, who was killed in combat on October 7. The ceremony took place on Sunday and was marked by a blend of joy for the new home and deep family sorrow. Itai expressed the family's pain and longing, emphasizing their ongoing hope and faith despite the loss. He said, "We feel intensely the sorrow of exile, the sorrow of destruction, the exile of the divine presence, but no less the greatness of time," underscoring the family's resilience and belief in future redemption.

Itai spoke directly to Amichai, saying, "You are here with us in this process. We live you, miss you, and wait for you so much. We understand there are entire systems up above, pushing and praying from here," highlighting how Amichai's memory continues to accompany the family even during moments of happiness. He connected the building of the new home to the yearning for complete redemption, hoping for a new light to shine on Zion and for the return of all heroes who sacrificed their lives for the people and the land.

Towards the end of his speech, Itai referenced traditional mourning customs observed under the wedding canopy, particularly the placing of ashes on the groom's head. He explained that the ashes represent those from Sinai, Gaza, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and all across Israel, symbolizing the family's deep longing for these places. The speech poignantly intertwined themes of loss, hope, and continuity within the context of a joyful family event.
