Thousands of Haredi Singles Engage in Annual Tying-the-Knot Ceremony on Tu B'Av

The story · English

Tu B'Av, traditionally known as the Jewish holiday of love and matchmaking, has become a pivotal night in the Haredi community for engagement ceremonies. Each year, hundreds of couples become engaged on this night, which has earned the nickname 'The Night of Miraculous Salvation' and serves as a major catalyst for matchmaking within the ultra-Orthodox world. The phenomenon, observed for several years in yeshivas and seminaries, is marked by astonishing statistics: about one in three couples engaged during the year had their names mentioned during the special prayers held on Tu B'Av.

This unique custom centers around a prayer gathering at the tomb of Rabbi Yonatan ben Uziel in Amuka, a practice discovered and promoted by the late Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. He emphasized that participation in these prayers is the proper effort parents can make to merit the joy of seeing their children married. The ceremony includes a special "Pidyon Nefesh" (redemption of the soul) ritual and recitation of verses aimed at removing spiritual obstacles, which has been described as a powerful and emotional experience.

The matchmaking challenge is significant among thousands of yeshiva students and seminary girls in Israel and abroad, many of whom face prolonged periods without finding a spouse. Leading rabbis have referred to this as a "generation's problem." The Tu B'Av event offers hope and has become a focal point for thousands seeking to complete their personal journey toward marriage.

This year’s ceremony, scheduled for the night of Tu B'Av in Amuka, will be led by prominent rabbis including Rabbi Binyamin Finkel and Rabbi Shraga Steinman, with Rabbi Mordechai Lieber Cohen conducting the special Pidyon Nefesh ritual. Matchmakers report that thousands of names mentioned during last year’s prayers appeared in engagement announcements within the following year, underscoring the event’s perceived effectiveness. The event draws thousands of participants from Israel and the diaspora, who submit names for individual mention during the prayers, reinforcing the ceremony’s status as a cornerstone of Haredi matchmaking culture.
