Bereaved Father Urges Yeshiva Students to Prioritize Safety During Summer Trips

The story · English

Yitzhak Abohav, a bereaved father who lost his son Israel Moshe about 22 years ago in a drowning accident, issued a heartfelt plea to yeshiva students ahead of the summer break. During this period, thousands of yeshiva students embark on trips and vacations across Israel. Abohav's son, aged 22, drowned in a seemingly safe swimming pool despite all safety measures during a family outing. Reflecting on his personal tragedy, Abohav described the devastating impact on families who lose loved ones in drownings and accidents in natural and seemingly safe places.

In his message, Abohav warned students against taking unnecessary risks or testing limits during their excursions. He emphasized that nature, while beautiful, can be unexpectedly dangerous, and even familiar pools or quiet locations can conceal hazards. He stressed that caution is not a sign of weakness but a responsibility of a Torah scholar, who must protect the life entrusted to him as much as he studies Torah.

Abohav urged students to thoroughly check the safety and conditions of any location before visiting, avoid going alone, and never underestimate even small dangers. He reminded them that as Torah students, they carry the name of God and that preserving life is the truest form of sanctifying God's name. He concluded with a heartfelt appeal for students to watch out for themselves and each other, return safely to their families, and prevent others from experiencing the pain he endured.
