Chief Rabbi Isaac Yosef Strongly Condemns Secular Studies in Haredi High Schools and Academies

The story · English

In a rare and sharply worded letter, Chief Rabbi Isaac Yosef, the Rishon LeZion, criticized Haredi high schools and academic institutions that incorporate secular studies, urging young men to study exclusively in traditional Haredi yeshivas. The letter, revealed first by Kikar HaShabbat, was written in response to a student debating whether to continue in a yeshiva high school or transfer to a Haredi yeshiva. Rabbi Yosef unequivocally rejected the former, warning of spiritual dangers and calling on parents not to interfere with their sons' decisions, even issuing halachic rulings that exempt sons from honoring parents if pressured to attend these institutions.

Rabbi Yosef emphasized that only in a holy Haredi yeshiva can a student truly grow into a Torah scholar, absorbing the teachings of great rabbis such as Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. He criticized the atmosphere in yeshiva high schools, noting issues with fear of God and negative attitudes toward Haredim and rabbis. He asserted that secular studies harm the quality of Torah learning and that even those who appear Haredi in these schools lack a genuine aspiration to master Torah.

The letter also harshly condemned academic institutions, labeling them "broken pits" of secular knowledge and heresy. Rabbi Yosef declared that parents pushing their children toward secular or yeshiva high school studies misunderstand the purpose of education and livelihood. He ruled that sons are not obligated to obey parents in matters concerning fundamental religious beliefs and Torah study, stressing that parents have no right to interfere where the son's heart desires to learn.

Addressing the student personally, Rabbi Yosef reassured him not to fear economic or social consequences from leaving secular studies, citing ample opportunities in rabbinical, judicial, and teaching roles within the religious world. He quoted Maimonides and Maharam Ben Chaviv to clarify that secular wisdom is permissible only as a tool to support Torah study, not as a primary focus that detracts from true Torah learning. The letter concluded with a blessing for the student to become a true Torah scholar and succeed in his service to God.

This letter highlights ongoing tensions within the Haredi community regarding secular education and the boundaries of religious study, reflecting a strict stance against integration with academic frameworks.
