The story · English

Yoav Kutner, a renowned Israeli music editor and presenter, publicly addressed the misrepresentation of his statements in the first episode of the documentary series "Black Gold: The Story of Israeli Hip-Hop," which premiered on Kan 11. Kutner shared full archival clips on Facebook to clarify that the series edited together comments made about hip-hop over a decade apart, creating a misleading impression that he disparaged the genre and the influential group Shabak S. He emphasized that his original remarks referred specifically to the "Nasty Rap" subgenre and the American group 2 Live Crew's controversial song "Me So Horny," not to Israeli hip-hop or Shabak S as a whole.

The seven-part series, created by Amri Dekel Kadosh and Rom Atik, explores the evolution of Israeli hip-hop from a fringe culture to a mainstream musical force. While praised for its cinematic quality, it faced criticism for omissions and the portrayal of key figures. Kutner explained that his 1990 comments on the vulgarity of certain rap styles were taken out of context and combined with a 2000 clip where he initially dismissed Shabak S but later acknowledged their talent after seeing live performances. He also shared a supportive 2000 encyclopedia entry he wrote about the group.

Ayal "Kwami" Friedman, featured in the series and a pioneer of the foundational hip-hop radio show "Black Business," also responded, praising the series but noting that Kutner's significant role in promoting hip-hop in Israeli media was underrepresented. Friedman highlighted Kutner's early support for hip-hop artists and his efforts to bring the genre to wider audiences through radio and television.

Kfir "Hami" Artzi of Shabak S supported Kutner, stating that the band grew up listening to his music selections and regarded him as a major influence. Artzi clarified that the band's limited airplay on Galei Tzahal was due to complex factors unrelated to Kutner or Avari Gilad. He urged against oversimplifying the history into binary support or opposition and affirmed Kutner's lasting importance in Israeli music.

Kan 11 chose not to comment on the controversy.
