Haredi Editor Moshe Weisberg Explains His Choice to Keep His Face Private

The story · English

Moshe Weisberg, editor of the Haredi news site "B'chadrei Haredim," shared in a detailed interview his journalistic philosophy and approach to reporting within the ultra-Orthodox community. He emphasized that a Haredi journalist's role extends beyond merely delivering information to making careful decisions about what not to publish, prioritizing responsibility to readers over the general media's "right to know." Weisberg noted that he often withholds tragic stories that could deepen the pain of bereaved families, choosing discretion over exclusivity.

Despite being a prominent figure in Haredi media, Weisberg deliberately avoids public exposure, refraining from publishing his photo or becoming a public personality. He prefers to maintain his private life as a family man and regular synagogue attendee, avoiding encounters with readers that might arise from public recognition. Weisberg also revealed that "Moshe Weisberg" is a professional pseudonym, chosen to separate his journalistic identity from his personal life, and he previously used other names in media work to protect his privacy.

Weisberg described his extensive network of sources across various Haredi communities and leadership circles, highlighting that much information he receives is filtered and not published to maintain community trust and avoid harm. He discussed the evolving relationship between Haredi media and the courts of Hasidic rebbes, where official media liaisons now help ensure accurate and reliable information flow, preventing rumors and misinformation.

He also recounted legal challenges stemming from published reports, which reinforced his commitment to verifying information and exercising caution, especially on sensitive topics. Alongside his journalistic duties, Weisberg maintains a disciplined religious lifestyle, including regular communal prayers, which he says provide him with stability and resilience amid the demands of his around-the-clock work.
