Second Red Heifer Calf Born in Golan Heights Sparks Religious and Scientific Interest

The story · English

The National Institute for the Study of the Red Heifer announced the birth of a second red heifer calf in the Golan Heights, about six weeks after the first one was born. The new calf was born in the herd of Shay Givon, the institute's farmer, who deliberately avoided tagging the calf's ear to preserve its purity. Givon noted the historic significance of this period, citing widespread interest from diverse Jewish communities worldwide regarding the red heifer and its connection to the Temple and ritual purity.

The calf was born as a twin to a male calf, a situation that often causes developmental issues in the female due to a condition called "freemartinism," where hormone mixing affects the uterus. This biological challenge is a key topic for the institute's rabbinical study group, which includes about twenty rabbis overseeing the project’s halachic (Jewish legal) aspects. This group recently debated the kosher status of the previous red heifer, which had been tagged shortly after birth.

Rabbi Azaria Ariel, head of the institute's study group, highlighted the complexity of determining whether internal congenital defects disqualify a red heifer from ritual use. He emphasized that the group will not decide alone but will seek guidance from leading halachic authorities. The institute aims to publish its conclusions within a year and plans to release a comprehensive four-volume work titled "The Red Heifer According to Halacha," summarizing a decade of research for the broader rabbinic community in Israel.
