Israeli Rabbi Condemns Using Talmud Study to Justify Meat and Parties During Mourning Days

The story · English

Rabbi Ido Fechter strongly criticized the emerging practice in the religious Zionist community of organizing pre-planned Talmud tractate completions during the Three Weeks and the Nine Days mourning period. These study sessions are reportedly used to permit eating meat or holding celebratory events, including parties and watching festive occasions like the World Cup final. Rabbi Fechter urged the public not to conduct such study completions as a loophole to justify personal desires, asking, "Who do you think you are fooling by doing this?"

He drew a direct connection between these attempts and other public issues, emphasizing that exploiting Torah study for secular or political goals severely undermines the sanctity of the Torah. "Anyone who uses Torah learning to achieve worldly aims desecrates it," he stated, noting this applies regardless of the context, whether for welfare benefits, military service exemptions, sports events, or eating meat.

Rabbi Fechter further stressed the religious and moral severity of circumventing halacha in this manner, calling it far worse than directly violating customs. He concluded by highlighting that this form of desecration is more serious than failing to observe the obligation to reduce joy during these solemn days.
