The story · English

On October 7, 2024, as Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israeli communities, the reserve soldiers of Israel's Alon 228 Brigade swiftly mobilized to counter an anticipated Hezbollah invasion from Lebanon into northern Israel. Colonel Ilan Shapira, commander of the Alon 228 reserve brigade, first saw footage of armed Hamas militants in the southern city of Sderot and initially expected the fighting to remain in the south. However, a warning from Brigadier General Israel Shomer, commander of the northern 146th Division, prompted Shapira to urgently call up all his troops, anticipating a large-scale Hezbollah incursion into the Galilee region.

Thousands of reservists from Alon 228 responded rapidly, traveling from across Israel to the brigade's emergency base near Afula. Despite logistical challenges such as a shortage of buses, the soldiers used all available vehicles to reach the front lines. Colonel Yaniv Malka, deputy commander of the 210th Division responsible for the Golan Heights, also rushed north after surviving missile attacks in southern Israel. Other commanders, including Dan Dan and Yanir Betzalel, overcame personal doubts and logistical hurdles to assemble their units for the northern defense.

By October 8, the brigade had deployed thousands of well-equipped reservists throughout the Hula Valley, establishing defensive positions to block Hezbollah’s expected advance toward Tiberias and Safed. Despite initial concerns about equipment shortages reminiscent of the 2006 Lebanon War, the brigade’s supplies were largely adequate. The brigade’s role was to form a second line of defense behind the main forces, prepared to stop Hezbollah if they breached the initial border defenses.

The rapid and dedicated mobilization of Alon 228’s reservists, many of whom interrupted personal and professional lives, including soldiers abroad who returned immediately, proved critical. At 16:00 on October 8, Colonel Shapira reported all units were in position and ready. Ultimately, the reserve forces successfully halted Hezbollah’s advance without firing a single shot, underscoring the effectiveness and commitment of Israel’s reserve military system.

The story of Alon 228’s mobilization and defense efforts is detailed in the book "Order 8: Lebanon, The Story of the Alon 228 Reserve Brigade," published by Yedioth Books.
