Tel Aviv Resident Diagnosed With West Nile Virus in First 2026 Israeli Case

The Israeli Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental Protection announced the first confirmed case of West Nile virus infection in Israel for the summer of 2026. The patient is a resident of Tel Aviv. Authorities have instructed the relevant local municipality to intensify prevention, monitoring, mosquito control, and public awareness efforts.

Professor Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Public Health Division at the Ministry of Health, explained that West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites from mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. While most cases are mild or asymptomatic, severe symptoms such as encephalitis or meningitis can occur in rare instances.

Dr. Shay Reicher, director of the Pest and Pest Control Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, detailed ongoing year-round mosquito surveillance, with increased focus during the mosquito season from June to November. Despite extensive monitoring and thousands of mosquito larvae inspections and hundreds of adult mosquito captures tested in Health Ministry labs, no infected mosquitoes have been detected so far this season.

The ministries emphasized the public's role in reducing mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water in containers like buckets, flowerpot trays, old tires, gutters, ornamental pools, and barrels. They also recommended using mosquito repellents, installing window screens, wearing long light-colored clothing during dusk, and using fans to deter mosquitoes. Residents are urged to report mosquito nuisances or standing water in public areas to local authorities via hotline *106 to enable targeted and efficient removal of breeding sites.

The ministries will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as necessary to protect public health during the peak mosquito season.
