Israel Reports First West Nile Virus Case in Tel Aviv Summer 2026
The Israeli Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental Protection have confirmed the first West Nile virus case of 2026 in a Tel Aviv resident. In response, the Environmental Protection Ministry instructed the city municipality to intensify mosquito control and prevention efforts.
Professor Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Public Health Division, explained that the disease is transmitted by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. She noted that while the illness is usually mild, severe symptoms such as encephalitis can occur in rare cases. Dr. Shay Reicher from the Environmental Protection Ministry emphasized that ongoing mosquito surveillance has not yet detected virus-carrying mosquitoes.
Authorities urged the public to eliminate standing water sources, use mosquito repellents, and install window screens to reduce infection risk. These measures aim to prevent further spread during the summer months when mosquito activity peaks.
