Google's AI Search Features Raise Safety Concerns for Children, Report Finds

The story · English

A recent safety report by Common Sense Media in the United States has identified significant risks posed by the artificial intelligence tools integrated into Google's search engine for children and teenagers. Researchers simulated searches using accounts representing 11- and 15-year-olds with SafeSearch enabled and found that the AI often provided incorrect information, solved homework assignments instead of aiding learning, and even offered instructions for creating deepfake forgeries. In one serious case, the AI failed to properly address mental health queries, directing users to an outdated helpline.

The main concern for parents is the difficulty in controlling these AI-generated contents, as they are embedded directly within Google's standard search results and appear even when content filtering is fully active. Although there is a workaround to disable the AI feature, most young users encounter it by default, with about 75% of American teenagers already using AI-enhanced search results.

Google responded to the criticism by stating that the queries tested in the report were vague and artificial, not reflecting typical user behavior. Nonetheless, the report intensifies public pressure on Google to ensure that its rapid AI integration does not compromise the safety and protection of its youngest users. As AI-driven search results become increasingly common, experts advise parents to actively monitor their children's online activities rather than relying solely on Google's automatic filters.
