AI in Schools: Experts Warn of Cognitive and Social Risks for Students

As the new school year begins, the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence tools in educational settings presents a complex dilemma for schools, parents, and students. While AI is often hailed as a revolutionary pedagogical solution, its rapid integration into classrooms carries significant challenges and risks. Dr. Liraz Margalit, a researcher in digital behavior, cautions against a hasty embrace of the technology, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of AI's impact on the future of education.

Citing research from MIT, Margalit highlights potential negative cognitive and learning effects on students. According to the study, students who rely on AI tend to retain less information and exhibit a notable decrease in their ability to tolerate frustration. "Children remember less, they don't recall the material 10 minutes after being asked, but much worse than that, they are unable to withstand frustration," Margalit stated.

Beyond memory and resilience, the findings suggest that students may develop fewer essential "soft skills," including independent thinking, proactivity, and empathy. The reliance on instant AI-generated solutions over independent problem-solving hinders the development of psychological resilience and interpersonal skills. The immediate availability of answers and the reduced need for effort undermine critical thinking and the capacity to handle complexity.
