Israeli Soldier Undergoes Groundbreaking Joint Reconstruction Using Donor Tissue

The story · English

Captain Y, severely wounded in Gaza in January 2024, recently underwent an innovative surgical procedure to restore hand joints using processed human meniscus tissue from a donor. This advanced technique, led by world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. David Colbert from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, replaces damaged joints not with metal or plastic but with a biologically processed scaffold that integrates with the patient’s own cells to promote natural healing.

Dr. Colbert traveled to Israel at the initiative of the Magbit Foundation and in cooperation with Sheba Medical Center to perform three complex surgeries on Iron Swords fighters injured in combat and to train Israeli medical teams in this cutting-edge method. Captain Y, who lost one hand and suffered severe injuries to the other, described how Dr. Colbert’s approach gave him renewed hope by focusing on what remains possible rather than on his losses.

Dr. Colbert explained that the procedure does not grow new joints but uses a biologically based surface to reduce pain and restore movement, aiming to preserve the joint and enable the body to heal itself. He emphasized that treating young soldiers with such advanced reconstructive techniques is crucial, as innovations developed for severe cases often become standard care.

Dr. Amiram Arami, head of the Hand Surgery and Limb Salvage Department at Sheba, highlighted that the collaboration allowed for three complex surgeries and the training of Israeli teams, aiming to provide wounded soldiers with the world’s most advanced surgical technologies. The Magbit Foundation, which facilitated Dr. Colbert’s visit, pledged to continue strengthening Israel’s treatment and rehabilitation capabilities for war casualties.
