Knesset Committee Chair Halts Sessions Over Justice Ministry Absences, Vows No Law Advancement

On Monday, Smotrich Committee Chair Smotrich halted two consecutive Knesset committee meetings after representatives from the Justice Ministry failed to attend both sessions. The first meeting addressed urgent legislation concerning prolonged disciplinary proceedings, linked to the investigation of attorney Roy Kahlon. Noticing the empty seats reserved for Justice Ministry officials, Smotrich paused the session and criticized their absence.

Shortly after, a second meeting convened to discuss extending detention arrangements for terrorists captured during the October 7 Gaza operation, including restrictions on their access to legal counsel. Again, Justice Ministry representatives were absent, prompting Smotrich to suspend this session as well.

Smotrich condemned the no-shows as more than mere disrespect toward the Knesset, warning that he would not advance any legislation proposed by the Justice Ministry until they provide explanations. He stated, "I have a feeling they will come when they want to pass a law. Until they give answers, none of their laws will be advanced." He emphasized that the committee would not resume discussions until the Justice Ministry's legal advisors appear and justify their absence, adding, "If they don't care to come, they probably have too much time. I will not pass the law until I get explanations for why they are not here."
