OpenAI Shuts Down AI Browser Atlas, Integrates Features Into ChatGPT Desktop and Chrome Extension

OpenAI has decided to shut down Atlas, its AI-powered web browser launched in October last year as a challenge to Google Chrome's dominance. The closure comes less than a year after Atlas's debut, marking a strategic shift in OpenAI's approach to AI-assisted browsing. Instead of maintaining a separate browser, OpenAI plans to incorporate Atlas's tested capabilities into the ChatGPT desktop application and a new Chrome extension.

The upcoming Chrome extension will have access to the context of web pages users visit, enabling them to ask questions about content, summarize pages, and perform tasks directly within the browser. This feature aims to compete with similar tools like Google's Gemini Side Panel. Concurrently, OpenAI is enhancing the ChatGPT desktop app with expanded browsing functions, including website access, account logins, file downloads, and executing actions on web pages without leaving the app.

Additionally, OpenAI will operate a separate cloud-based browser running on its servers to assist AI agents in completing user tasks. The decision to close Atlas aligns with OpenAI's broader strategy to concentrate on core products by reducing side projects. Earlier this year, the company also discontinued Sora, its video application, reflecting this focused approach.
