Oman Rebukes Iranian Ambassador Following Unusual Drone Attacks

Oman summoned the Iranian ambassador for a formal reprimand after Iran launched an unusual drone attack on Omani territory, marking a significant escalation given the historically good relations between the two countries. The incident occurred amid a series of Iranian attacks targeting several Arab states including Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, and Jordan. Although Iran had previously conducted less severe strikes in Oman, this latest attack prompted Oman's Deputy Foreign Minister for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Khalid Al-Musalhi, to summon Iranian Ambassador Mousa Farhang and deliver a protest letter.

During the meeting, Al-Musalhi expressed Oman's strong displeasure, describing Iran's actions as "irresponsible." He emphasized the importance of respecting national sovereignty, adhering to principles of good neighborliness, avoiding interference in internal affairs, and upholding moral values that bind neighboring countries. Oman, known for its neutrality and role as a mediator between the US and Iran, views this attack as a challenge to its neutral stance, especially as Iran appears to perceive Oman as cooperating with the US.

The tension is further heightened by Iran's recent efforts to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway shared with Oman. Less than two weeks ago, Iran initiated measures to restrict maritime traffic along Oman's coastline, demanding all ships pass on the Iranian side of the strait, effectively seeking full control over the area. This move likely influenced Oman's decision to summon the Iranian ambassador. The developments raise questions about the future of Oman-Iran relations amid growing regional instability.
