Former IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot Reveals Netanyahu Opposed Appointment of First Openly Gay Aluf

Former IDF Chief of Staff and current chairman of the Yisrael party, Gadi Eizenkot, disclosed at the "Sagi Equality Laws in Life" conference that then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposed the promotion of Sharon Afek, the former Military Advocate General, to the rank of Aluf (Major General). Eizenkot hinted that Netanyahu, whom he referred to as "the same prime minister who was in the youth movement," expressed reservations about Afek's appointment due to his sexual orientation. Despite this, Eizenkot overcame the opposition, and the promotion announcement was made shortly afterward.

Eizenkot emphasized that his appointments were based on merit rather than personal characteristics, noting that he had appointed two outstanding individuals from the LGBTQ community without it being a factor in his decision. When asked if Afek's promotion faced resistance, Eizenkot confirmed it did but said the objection was quickly dismissed. He praised Afek as an exceptional legal mind and commander, highlighting his exemplary service as Military Advocate General from 2015 until 2021.

The defense minister at the time, Avigdor Lieberman, supported Eizenkot's recommendation. Afek was promoted to Aluf in 2018, becoming the first openly gay Major General in the IDF's history. Eizenkot also pledged to introduce equality laws for the LGBTQ community in the next government. Afek currently serves as a deputy attorney general in the civilian sector.
