Israelis Accurately Predict World Cup Quarterfinalists but Overrate Brazil, Poll Shows

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches the quarterfinal stage, a large Israeli fan poll conducted by Direct Polls reveals that Israeli football fans largely predicted the tournament's strongest teams correctly, though they overestimated Brazil's chances. Out of the eight teams remaining, France, Morocco, Spain, Belgium, Norway, England, Argentina, and Switzerland, Argentina, Spain, and France were among the top favorites identified by Israelis, with Brazil already eliminated despite being highly favored initially.

Argentina leads as both the professional and emotional favorite, with 21% of respondents naming it the top contender and 26% expressing a desire to see Argentina win. Brazil and Portugal, once popular picks, have been knocked out. The poll also highlighted surprise teams: while Israelis expected the United States to be a major upset contender, it was eliminated in the round of 16, whereas Morocco and Norway, with 17% and 15% support respectively, advanced to the quarterfinals, reflecting the tournament's unexpected dynamics.

Regarding VAR technology, 69% of Israelis view it positively or somewhat positively, believing it reduces refereeing errors, though some criticize its use in decisive moments. The poll also shows that 65% of Israelis have reduced their support for certain teams due to increased anti-Israel sentiment following the October 7 attack and ongoing conflict, indicating that political context influences fan allegiances.

Viewing habits have evolved during the tournament: initially, 31% planned to watch nearly all matches, 45% focused on key games, and 12% intended to watch only the final stages. Now, as the quarterfinals begin, these groups have aligned with their viewing patterns. Additionally, 48% of Israelis still hope to see their national team qualify for a future World Cup, despite years of disappointment.

When it comes to game-day snacks, traditional preferences prevail, with 37% choosing sunflower seeds, 16% pizza, 5% shawarma, and 4% hamburgers. Direct Polls CEO Tzuriel Sharon summarized that the poll reflects not only fan preferences but also how Israelis experience the World Cup, blending global football excitement with local cultural and political realities.
