17-Year-Old Joakim Bom-Bom Emerges as Top Prospect in Global Basketball
Joakim Bom-Bom, a 17-year-old American forward/center standing 2.11 meters tall, is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most promising basketball talents outside the NBA. After leading the United States to victory at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul with a dominant 107-81 win over Serbia, Bom-Bom was named the tournament MVP. He averaged 19.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 2 assists, and 1.7 steals in just 22.8 minutes per game.
Bom-Bom's unique skill set combines size and versatility; weighing 111 kg with a 2.21-meter wingspan, he plays like a guard, capable of shooting from outside, dribbling, passing, and finishing near the basket. At the tournament, he shot 53.1% from three-point range and 88% from the free-throw line. His defensive and playmaking abilities were also notable, including seven blocks against Japan and seven assists versus Cameroon.
Born in Germany and raised in the US before moving to Spain at age 14, Bom-Bom developed in Barcelona's youth academy, gaining experience against older, stronger players. Last season, he averaged 18.9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for Barcelona's U18 team. US national team coach Scott Fitch praised his advanced understanding of FIBA rules, calling him "almost like an assistant coach." Teammates also highlighted his leadership and basketball IQ.
Bom-Bom is set to play college basketball for Duke University next season. Although he will not be draft-eligible until 2028 due to his age, scouts already consider him a likely top lottery pick because of his size, shooting, and offensive versatility. One scout noted he might need time to adjust physically to college basketball but has all the tools to contribute immediately.
His father, Ruben Bom-Bom, played in the NBA and Europe and now holds a senior position in the NBA's Basketball Africa League. Joakim Bom-Bom's rare combination of size, skill, and basketball intelligence positions him as a future star in the global basketball scene.
