Italy Advances Law to Return Art Looted During the Holocaust

The story · English

Italy has initiated legislation to establish a formal process for returning artworks and cultural assets looted or confiscated during the Holocaust and anti-Semitic persecutions. Unlike other European countries, Italy previously lacked a structured mechanism for restitution, causing legal challenges for families of Nazi and Fascist persecution victims. The bill was introduced in the Culture, Science, and Education Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, granting the government authority to create a dedicated system for the restitution of cultural property seized under Fascist racial laws starting in 1938 and during Nazi rule in Germany from 1933 onward. Federico Mollicone, a senior member of the ruling party, chairs the committee. Gideon Taylor, president of the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), praised the initiative as a "historic opportunity to finally achieve justice for victims of Nazi and Fascist persecutions and their heirs."
