Italy Faces Backlash Over Document Targeting Israeli Tourists and Businesses

A document circulated in Italy recently urged citizens to report the presence of "Zionist" tourists and businesses, including hotels, sparking outrage among the local Jewish community. The document called for cooperation against what it described as "neo-Zionist colonization" in Italy and encouraged spreading the message even during holidays. Although the document was removed following numerous reports from Israelis and Jews, community leaders warn this marks a dangerous escalation in antisemitism.

Dana, an Israeli resident of Bologna, told N12 that the initiative felt reminiscent of Nazi tactics from 1933, specifically targeting shops for marking. The Union of Jewish Communities in Italy condemned the document as a precise plan based on disinformation and propaganda aimed at bending civil society toward hatred and bias. They stressed that recent months have seen thousands of antisemitic incidents met with alarming silence from civil society.

The Union called on institutions to intervene decisively to prevent this illegal and hateful phenomenon, emphasizing that democracy and cultural coexistence in Italy are at stake. They also expressed support for a parliamentary bill addressing antisemitism, highlighting that combating antisemitism is essential not only for Jews but for the entire civil society and democracy.
