Israeli Reservist Undergoes Rare Life-Saving Surgery After Lebanon Clash Injury

Captain Malachi Mondani, a 26-year-old reservist platoon commander from Neve Sheva near the Gaza border, was severely wounded last week during a confrontation with militants in southern Lebanon. He was rushed to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa with multiple penetrating injuries that put his life at risk.

Upon arrival, imaging tests revealed a critical and unusual condition: a shrapnel fragment lodged just millimeters from his aorta, the body's main artery. This posed a grave dilemma for the medical team, as any movement of the fragment could rupture the artery and cause fatal bleeding. However, operating was also highly risky due to his multiple injuries.

After consultations among trauma specialists, angiographers, and cardiac surgeons, the team decided to proceed with surgery. Senior cardiac surgeon Dr. Zvi Adler and resident Dr. Kamel Morshed successfully removed the shrapnel without damaging the aorta. Professor Gil Bolotin, head of Rambam's cardiac surgery department, noted the rarity of the case and the lack of medical literature on such injuries, which complicated decision-making.

The operation was successful, eliminating the immediate threat to Captain Mondani's life. His condition stabilized, and he was transferred for further treatment. Professor Bolotin expressed relief at the positive outcome, emphasizing the complexity and danger involved in the procedure.
