Blackheads, medically known as open comedones, form when sebum and dead skin cells oxidize upon exposure to air. Many people instinctively try to remove them by squeezing or using aggressive adhesive strips, but dermatologists warn these methods can cause permanent skin damage and scarring. Pressing blackheads often pushes bacteria and debris deeper into pores, leading to painful inflammation and enlarged pores that refill quickly.
Popular quick fixes like nose strips and abrasive scrubs also harm the skin’s natural barrier, prompting excess oil production and worsening blackhead formation. Over-drying the skin with harsh soaps or alcohol-based products triggers a feedback loop where the skin produces more sebum, exacerbating the problem.
The recommended treatment involves using products containing salicylic acid (BHA), which penetrates pores to dissolve the oily plugs without physical irritation.
