Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Plante Faces Sexual Assault Allegations in Maine Race

Graham Plante, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, is embroiled in a serious controversy that could jeopardize one of the party's most critical midterm election races. According to a Politico report, Jenny Rasico, a 41-year-old woman from Maine who had an on-and-off relationship with Plante for over two years, accused him of forcibly having sex with her in late 2021 after he entered her home uninvited while intoxicated. Plante vehemently denies the allegations, calling them "completely false" and "disturbing and serious," and stated he is considering his next steps with his family and campaign team. All his upcoming campaign events have been canceled.

Rasico said she ended contact with Plante after the incident. Their unstable relationship spanned from 2019 to 2021, and she had previously warned friends against getting involved with him. The timing of the allegations is particularly sensitive as Maine is a key battleground where Democrats aim to regain Senate control. Plante is set to face Republican incumbent Susan Collins, who has served five terms.

Plante, 41, a former Marine and oyster farmer, emerged as a progressive outsider this year with endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Despite no prior political experience, he won the Democratic primary. Supporters view him as a voice for working-class frustration with Washington's establishment, while critics see his controversies as a political liability in a state requiring a near-perfect candidate to defeat Collins.

This latest allegation adds to a series of scandals surrounding Plante, including past offensive social media posts about women, police, and minorities, and minimizing sexual assault. He also previously faced backlash for a Nazi SS Totenkopf symbol tattoo, which he said he got in 2007 without knowing its meaning. Additionally, his wife, Amy Gartner, revealed she found sexually explicit messages he sent to other women during their marriage, which they say they have addressed through counseling.

Plante has apologized for his past behavior, attributing it to PTSD, depression, and heavy drinking after military service. His anti-Israel stance has drawn attention in Washington; he has called the Gaza conflict a "genocide," supported limiting U.S. military aid to Israel, and praised a 2014 Hamas attack that killed Israeli soldiers. The Democratic Party now faces a dilemma: whether to support Plante amid the allegations or push for his withdrawal before the July 13 deadline to replace him on the ballot. After surviving multiple controversies, this new accusation presents a significant test for both Plante and the party as they seek to unseat Collins and regain Senate control.
