Lebanon Sends Defense Minister to Khamenei Funeral to Ease Tensions with Iran

A Lebanese political source explained the presence of Lebanon's Defense Minister Michel Mansi at the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a symbolic gesture aimed at lowering tensions with Iran. The source, familiar with Beirut's political corridors, told Kan News that this move does not represent a policy shift but rather a desire to avoid escalating conflict with Tehran. The Lebanese leadership reportedly wants to prevent Iran from undermining Lebanon's recently signed agreement with Israel, which faces strong opposition from Hezbollah.

The source also noted that Saudi Arabia sent official representatives to Khamenei's funeral, suggesting that Lebanon's decision to send a delegation was in line with regional diplomatic norms. Mansi's attendance surprised many due to the strained relations between Lebanon and Iran, especially amid disagreements over Hezbollah's disarmament and Iran's attempts to maintain influence in Lebanon against Beirut's official stance.

Various countries, including Armenia, Qatar, Egypt, and Pakistan, sent representatives to the funeral, alongside Iran-backed militant groups such as the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades and Yemen's Houthis. Lebanon's official delegation attended alongside Hezbollah and the Amal Movement, highlighting the complex political dynamics at play.
