Iran Displays Khamenei's Coffin in Tehran Ahead of Funeral Procession to Mashhad
The coffin of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was displayed in Tehran on Friday as preparations began for his funeral procession. The ceremonies are set to start tomorrow and conclude on July 9 with his burial in the city of Mashhad. Representatives from various countries, including Armenia, as well as Iran-backed militant groups such as the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades and Yemen's Houthis, paid respects at the coffin.
Several mourning ceremonies for Khamenei are planned in the coming days in both Tehran and Qom. Meanwhile, a recent report by The New York Times revealed that U.S. officials believed Israel planned to assassinate senior members of the Iranian delegation involved in talks with the United States. The targeted individuals reportedly included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The U.S. feared such an attack could derail negotiations and urged regional countries to warn Iran of the threat. Israel declined to comment on the report.
Additional reports indicated that former U.S. President Donald Trump considered resuming military action against Iran but ultimately chose diplomacy. Furthermore, the U.S. and Iran have reportedly agreed to cease hostilities and resume negotiations, coinciding with the funeral events.
