Rare Tropical Water Apple Arrives in Israel, Food Influencer Ron Yohananov Tastes It

The story · English

A rare tropical fruit known as the water apple, or by its other names Malay apple and chompoo, has recently arrived in Israel from South Asia. This fruit is mainly found in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand and is notable for its bell-like shape, shiny thin skin, and reddish-pink color. It contains the highest water content among fruits worldwide, even surpassing watermelon, and is low in calories, providing vitamin C, dietary fiber, and a small amount of potassium.

The water apple's texture is described as crisp and very juicy, with a subtle, almost non-sweet flavor reminiscent of starfruit or pear. Some tasters note a soapy taste similar to coriander or basil. To introduce the fruit to Israeli consumers, the distributor Noy Hasadeh sent samples for a live tasting session with the Walla! news team, capturing their reactions.

Food influencer and chef Ron Yohananov also shared his authentic response to the unusual fruit during the tasting. The water apple is now available for purchase through the Noy Hasadeh retail network in Israel.
