Plastic-Free July Highlights Common Kitchen Habits That Increase Plastic Exposure

The story · English

The "Plastic-Free July" campaign, active in about 190 countries, encourages reducing single-use plastic consumption for one month to foster long-term environmental and health benefits. In 2025, approximately 174 million people participated globally, contributing to a reduction of around 15 million tons of waste. In Israel, the campaign is led by the environmental NGO Zalul, which promotes advanced regulations to reduce single-use plastics and organizes numerous coastal and river cleanups.

The campaign draws attention to everyday kitchen habits that increase plastic exposure and waste. One common mistake is heating food in plastic containers in the microwave, which can cause harmful plastic chemicals to leach into food, especially when heated or oily. The recommended alternative is to transfer food to glass or ceramic dishes before heating.

Other frequent errors include drinking from plastic bottles left in hot environments like cars or sunlight, using disposable plastic utensils and plates for hot food and drinks, storing leftovers in plastic containers, and buying heavily plastic-packaged foods. The campaign advises switching to reusable stainless steel or glass bottles, using reusable utensils and dishes, opting for fresh and unpackaged foods, and gradually replacing plastic storage with glass containers.

Additional tips include always carrying reusable shopping bags to avoid single-use plastic bags, checking cookware materials to avoid harmful PFAS coatings, and replacing dishwasher and laundry capsules with powders or gels sold in larger, less wasteful packaging. These steps not only reduce plastic waste but also minimize health risks associated with plastic exposure.

The campaign emphasizes that the goal is not perfection but starting with manageable changes that can become lasting habits, benefiting both personal health and the environment.
